" Mental Health? What's so special about it? " You can ask that again. What is so special about Mental Health? What is well-being and why does it matter so much that everyone is talking about it. If not texting or writing about it its all across social media 'Mental health here and mental health there'. Well, Mental health involves all aspects of our being, our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. The well-being of our mental health al so affect how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood through to adulthood.  People with mental health problems or challenges can get better and many  recover  completely. Bipolar Awareness Day 26 May 2019   What is Bipolar Spectrum Disorder? Three to four percent of South Africans have Bipolar. Bipolar disorder is more than just a simple mood swing. Bipolar is when one experiences a sudden, dramatic shift in the most extreme emotions. These shifts are not self induced, just a few hiccups in the brain. In the manic or “high” phase of the illness you aren’t just happy, you are ecstatic. A great burst of energy can be followed by a severe depression, which is the “low” phase of the disease. Periods of fairly normal moods can be experienced between cycles, which are different for different people. They can last for days, weeks, or even months. Bipolar disorder can be disabling, but it also responds well to treatment. Do you know a three year old who is having difficulties with communication?  They could be on an autistic spectrum. We are bidding farewell to a month that is famously known for raising well being awareness, a child abuse prevention and a sexual assault awareness month. In South Africa, it is also the month of freedom where we celebrate diversity and the freedom that our country has achieved.
